I recently read somewhere that if you go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, that you will sleep better at night and will be more functional during the day. Hmmm…I struggle with good sleep and my brain shuts down around 4:00pm every single day. Yep, right in time for me to start dinner, bath time, and evening activities.
Lovely.
I’ll be honest, I totally struggle with routine. (I’m sure this isn’t the last time I will say that.) It’s not that I don’t WANT to go to bed, it’s just that night time is MY time. It’s when the house is quiet, the munchkins are sleeping, and I can get stuff done. I get lost in this secret world of me and next thing I know it’s after midnight. And…..let’s add in the fact that I have trained myself to like sleeping in. I think it was all those years of 5am family scripture study and early morning sports practice growing up. After all, it’s always your parent’s fault, right? When I got out on my own, I rebelled. I slept in. Oooooh. I love sleeping in. It feels so indulgent. And some days a mama needs a little indulgence, seriously folks. But, staying up late and sleeping in isn’t working, for anyone in Magpie house.
So, I guess this is my lesson #1: Watching the Sunrise.
For one month I am going to wake up 6 days a week, (sorry peeps, but Sunday is sacred. I deserve extra sleep to prepare me for the apocalypse that is my family at church!) at 6:30am. And I have set a 6 day a week bedtime of 11:00pm. Maybe by the end of the month, I can overcome my rushing-around-trying-to-get-my-dude-on-the-school-bus-on-time issue. Maybe I can send him to school with a little healthier breakfast than cold sugar cereal. Maybe I’ll feel a little more prepared for what awaits me that day.
Maybe watching a few more sunrises will be good for my soul.
This is a huge issue for me too. I fall asleep on the couch after my kids drag me out of bed and they wreck the living room and beg me for breakfast while I get annoyed with them for waking me up! 🙂 Good idea…but dude…6:30! I’d say 7:30 or 8 would be a good time too!!! 🙂
