Winter has been getting to me lately.
Everything around me is cold and dead. I am losing my patience with it all… which is pretty sad seeing how I live in the mountains and we don’t get spring until May! Even feisty little Lou {my snow-bunny!} has been dreaming of Spring! But, in her defense, the sledding snow has been few and far between so the glorious winter fun has been pretty non-existent. It’s only February, it’s gonna be a looooooooooooooooooong few months!
The HERBS that I started a few weeks ago have pushed through the dirt and are cute little seedlings.
My kids have had a lot of fun watching the roots grow down in the dirt through the sides of the clear plastic cups.
Life is a pretty amazing process, isn’t it?
Two of my girls have been especially interested in it all, so I figured I better find something else for them to grow to keep them curious!
Which lead us to our little onion experiment…
Did you know you can grow your own green onions from kitchen scraps? Yep, you sure can! Next time you chop up some green goodness to flavor your food, save the white root ends! All you have to do is place them in a small container of water {I used a half pint jelly jar} and set them in a sunny window!
In just a couple of weeks and you will have beautiful green onions growing right in your kitchen.
Ah-haaa…I’m going to try this!! Thanks 🙂 Laurel
Are you kidding me? What? I had no idea. You’ve just made my husband’s day. He is the biggest shallots fan! I am trying this. And I am pinning this!

This is so awesome…how perfect that green onions really do regenerate themselves. Thanks so much for sharing this at our Cinch party! Karah
How often do you replace the water?
Hi Jeanette! I refill the water as the level drops and then replace the water when it starts to look murky. I like to use room temperature water so as not to shock the onion roots.
Really a Great Article
