A couple weeks ago, I was trying to keep my mind off my youngest starting school so I did a few little projects to help me keep my sanity.
One of them was LONG overdue.

We moved into our home 5 years ago. Doing what a lot of people do, as we unpacked boxes, we threw stuff in drawers and on shelves as fast as humanly possible. Since the day those little plastic bottles got chucked into the drawer, I’ve been wanting to find a better solution but nothing seemed to work.
I love to cook and can never seem to have enough seasonings. I buy my herbs and spices in bulk because I love the higher quality and lower cost. The problem is, I don’t have a ton of cupboard space for them so they are mostly relegated to an overcrowded drawer. I had searched all over for spice jars that would make the spices easier to find and make the drawer more function-able but I was striking out everywhere I looked.

Late one night while scrolling through Pinterest I found THIS fun idea from Dwellings by DeVore and realized that little jelly jars might just fit my needs perfectly!

I had all the supplies except extra jelly jars so I grabbed some of those from my local store and then set to work.
I was trying to do this project as inexpensively as possible, so I used chalkboard paint I had leftover in the basement. You could totally use a spray can of chalkboard paint, I’m sure that would be much quicker, but this worked fine.

If you don’t feel like getting your hands dirty, you could simply print out some darling chalkboard printables like THESE on sticker paper instead. Aren’t the aqua ones fantastic?

After my paint dried, I seasoned the little chalkboards with chalk. All you do is turn your chalk on it’s side and rub it really good all over the surface of the chalkboard. Then wipe it with a dry rag or paper towel. After it’s seasoned you can label to your hearts content. I chose to use a chalkboard marker because I didn’t want my kids to wipe the labels off with their sneaky little fingers, but you can use whatever you want.

I’m so happy with how they turned out! Not only are they easier to refill than those dumb old plastic ones, but I can see exactly how much of each spice I have plus the jars stack, giving me much more room in my drawer!

I do keep some of the spices I use most in pint sized jars for convenience sake. I go through cinnamon, baking soda, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder like nobody’s business so the larger jars work much better for those.
I also keep my salt, bay leaves, and things like that in quart jars up on a shelf. I used my label maker with some transparent label tape to make small clear labels for the front of the larger jars since they sit on a shelf and I look straight at them. I did include a chalkboard label on the tops to keep things uniform.

I love cheap, simple fixes for everyday problems, don’t you?
This might not be exactly what you are looking for, for your own spice drawer but maybe it’ll help you think outside the silly mish-mashed sized plastic spice tubes from the grocery store.
