I know this isn’t very popular to say, but I’m not a huge Halloween fan. Don’t get me wrong, I love cute little kids in fun costumes and y’all know I dig the excessive amounts of sugar! But, I don’t love guts and gore. Spudnuts, babies dressed as bugs, Charlotte in her spider web, apple cider, and trick or treat? Yes, please. Zombies, sexy nurses, sparkly vampires, and children of the corn? Not so much.
I’ve been trying to add some fun for the Halloween holiday into my home but still, keep things on a happy note. This year I gave my girls free rein on holiday decorating in the living room. Our mantle holds my artist daughter’s collection of Halloween canvases along with a fun felt garland I found at Swiss Days. There is a lot going on and I know that’s generally against decorating rules but it’s Halloween and it makes my daughter feel a bit of pride so I love it.
In the dining room, there is the book page garland I made last fall and a chalkboard mixed into my plate wall. My centerpiece needed a little touch of whimsy so I bought a few supplies and set to work. Here’s what I came up with.

Now back to the post…
This craft took 5 minutes tops from start to finish! It was inexpensive to make and turned out so cute! Separate the two pieces of the embroidery hoop, place the crocheted doily on the smaller hoop and then place the larger hoop on top. Sandwich everything together, stretch the doily to make it taut, then tighten the clasp on the top of the larger hoop to keep it all secure. Decide on your placing then, hot glue on your spiders!
Random tips-
I like to use a chopstick when working with hot glue so I don’t burn my fingerprints off. Yeah, it’s a long story. Let’s just say I have klutz issues. I use the chopstick to push things down into the glue. In this project, I used the chopstick to come from the underside of the doily, making sure everything was good and glued.
If you would like to use a hand-me-down doily and don’t want to ruin it with hot glue, you can stitch your spiders on with a needle and thread. It will take a bit more time but how fun to be able to use that special inherited keepsake!
I used an 8″ doily and a 6 1/2″ embroidery hoop but you can make yours as big or as small as fits your fancy!
This little spider web doily fits right into my farmhouse styled dining room without being in your face obnoxious or too scary for my tiny nieces and nephews. I think a big version would be darling on a front door. Hang it with a fun Halloween ribbon or some bits of green and orange lace!
Here’s what it looks like in my dining room.
Embroidery hoops, doilies, and glittered spiders.
I can totally handle that.
Farmhouse decor with a splash of Halloween.

Happy Halloween!
Looks great yet so simple. I love that it’s not too scary for the little ones.
I was totally going to do something similar to this along with my witch, but decided pick one project. This looks great!! I love how you displayed it!!
I like this idea Missy! I’m not into the creepy or gory decorations. This adds just the right amount of holiday decorating and still looks cute.
So first, I thought I was the only one who wasn’t really into Halloween! Like yes to little kid costumes but no to basically everything else haha! Second, this is SO cute! The doily makes it feel farmhouse-y and vintage and it looks so cute without being overly Halloween-y!
Nope, you’re so not alone! Haha! Thanks for your kind words, Sarah!
Love the doily as a spider web! Sooo cute!
I love this doily idea! That is absolutely darling!!
What a darling idea! I love the texture and fun this bring to your home decor. Love it!
Hi, Missy! This is a great idea! It`s so creative and it looks like an easy thing to do for ones who don`t have that much skill as you. Also, I totally agree with you about what this holiday become with adults and their costumes. Things like this brilliant decoration really bring back the fun and that is what matters most.
