Years ago I bought a pair of nightstands off of a friend. She was moving out of state and needed to get rid of them, and we had no furniture in our master bedroom. I’m not huge into midcentury modern style but they were a good price, in great condition, and I knew that I could resell them someday so I snapped them up.
While yard sale-ing on a Saturday morning this past summer, I ran across not one but two sets of matching nightstands. That’s a pretty great haul! After some measurement taking, I decided on one of the sets for our bedroom. My husband just rolled his eyes when he came home to find the garage full of nightstands. Especially when he saw the chewed up state of the pair that I picked for us. I guess I like a challenge. Somebody’s dog made a serious chew toy out of this set. With our own Muggle Mutt, it seemed only fitting to adorn our home.
The lower corners and feet on both nightstands were chewed to bits. There were also deep scratches where the dog’s nails had cut into the wood. The hardest parts to fix were definitely the feet. Their shell detailed design was time-consuming to sand and fill. Because I knew I wanted a heavily worn look, I gel stained all the spots I filled to match the original finish. That way when the wood showed through the paint, you wouldn’t see noticeable discoloration.
Gel stain is my go to when trying to blend in repairs.

Now back to the post…
These nightstands were a whole lot of work, but I couldn’t be happier with how they turned out! There is just something about the combination of green and brass that makes me all sorts of giddy! I’m going for a masculine/feminine compromise in our master so these will fit in perfectly. The deep green and the brass speak to my husband while the carved details speak to me. They will pair really well with our navy pillows. Someday, when I get that room done, I’ll post pics here.
Until then, here are a whole bunch of the nightstands!
I’m telling you, green and brass.
Like peanut butter and jelly.
The Bedford Brass collection from Martha Stewart Living at Home Depot is freaking amazing. I’ve never bought it before, but I will totally be getting more. The color is fantastic and they are solid, heavy pieces of hardware. I was surprised that they were so reasonably priced too! My local store did not carry them, so I had to order online then wait a couple weeks for them to get here but oh well. Hopefully, I’ll learn patience one of these days.
With my new to me nightstands in place and with MCM style having a resurgence the last little while, I’m ready to sell my old set. If you’re mad for midcentury, hit me up for details!
The original finish and hardware are just waiting to make all your Mad Men dreams come true.
What is your favorite color combination?
Great job Gypsy! They look beautiful!
