In a world that is obsessed with speed, there is something about snail mail that makes a person slow down and breathe.
Maybe it’s that “words of affirmation” part of my love language recipe, but getting a handwritten note from someone makes me high for days! I know it seems kind of silly and old fashioned these days, but I love to write notes and I love love LOVE to get them. I don’t know if it’s the pretty paper, the handwriting, the words, or simply the fact that somebody out there thought enough of me to take the time to jot down some thoughts but happy mail speaks to my heart.
When I gave birth to my youngest daughter, my grandparents gave me a wooden jewelry box. My dad had made the box by hand for my grandmother when he was in a high school wood shop class. My grandma had used it for decades but eventually it found it’s way down to the storage room where it sat for many years collecting dust. My grandparents knew how much I would love the box, so they gave it to me and I’m so grateful.
It has become my treasure box, and rightfully so… anything my dad has created with his two hands is a treasure to me.
I’m not really sure when it began but the soft green velvet lining of my dad’s treasure box now nestles some of my most precious of possessions, my cards and letters. If at some time in our friendship you sent me a note that was truly from your heart, it can most likely be found in the box. There are cards from past visiting teachers. Letters from elderly friends now long past. There are birthday messages, homemade valentines, thank you notes, children’s doodles made by once tiny hands, and even a few love letters from my sweetheart.
I keep them for the hard days.
When I find myself struggling, needing a little light, I find a quiet place, open my box, and begin to read. In a few short words, I am reminded of all the people in my life who love me, who need me, and who see me even in the invisible hours. Some letters are tear stained, some are slightly torn. Each one is different and all are deeply loved.
I can’t help thinking that the world needs more snail mail.
More letters of encouragement, thanksgiving, and love.
A simple note with a thoughtful message can truly change a day and soften a heart. I have always been a big note writer, but I want to step up my game and be a bit more purposeful. How often do I think to myself how amazing someone is, how grateful I am for them, or how much my heart hurts for them? How often do I let others know that they are in my thoughts? Not enough! So, I’m challenging myself to write more words of love this month, to send more happy mail.
In that vein, I thought I’d share some darling cards and stationary in case you want to join me in this happy mail revolution!
