Hey friends!
I thought I’d share a quick and easy DIY tutorial today that will perk up your patio without a lot of work.
I have received several questions about potting succulents since I shared my succulent teacher gift a few months ago. It seems like peeps are a little freaked out by succulents for some reason or another. But please don’t be!
Succulents can be the easiest plants if you know a few simple basics.

Now back to the post…Tricks to Succulents
- Succulents are usually dry weather natives. They are often drought resistant, storing extra water in their leaves and stems. Sooo, tip number one is don’t over-water. Succulents hate having wet feet. They need to dry out between waterings. I know this feels a little counter intuitive but they’ll be much happier if you don’t drown them every other day. Water thoroughly every other week and then let them be. Once you get the hang of this, you’ll love that you don’t have to babysit them all the time!
- Succulents like soil that provides good drainage. You can pretty much use any container or pot as long as you have a layer of gravel in the bottom and some good cactus/succulent soil. This isn’t the time to dig soil from your backyard to save cash. A bag of the stuff they like is under $6. Just do it.
- Succulents LOVE sunshine. Put them in a sunny location like a window sill or on the patio table in the back yard. They usually like at least 6 hours of sun a day. This seems like overkill to say but I’m going to say it anyway, a succulent placed in a windowless half bath is a dead succulent, my friends. Do that and you can officially call yourself a plant killer. If you are dead set on a succulent in a dark space, just buy a fakie and call it a day.
Ok, see!
That wasn’t so hard, was it? Now let’s get to the fun part, planting.Supplies:
- Succulents
- Container
- Pebbles or Gravel
- Cactus and Succulent Potting Soil
Potting Succulents
Place a layer of gravel in the container of your choice.
I’m using an old card file box and a couple other vintage treasures for mine.Spread some succulent soil over the gravel.
Plant your succulent in the container, then fill in around it with more potting soil.
Give it a good drink of water and you’re done.
No joke. It’s that easy. Here’s what mine looked like once they were all planted.
I’ve gotta tell you, I’m a little partial to the angel food cake pan planter. Must be the baker in me. I took these potted treasures over to Aspen Grove Rustics on Main Street in Heber City over the weekend. They are gorgeous statement planters and are sure to pretty up any garden party! If you are local, stop by and snap one up before they are gone!
Are you are feeling a little less nervous about succulents now? I hope so! They really are so easy! With so many different varieties to choose from, you can create anything you can imagine.
Just remember that little tip about them hating wet feet and you’re golden, Ponyboy.
