You know when you find a piece and think it’s perfect for your kid’s room and so you redo it only to realize it’s not going to work?
Yeah, that happened to me with this darling Wythe Blue dresser.

My bestie called me a few months ago to tell me she had a dresser she was getting rid of that I might want for my girls’ room. My two youngest share a bedroom and it’s getting kind of cozy as they grow. This dresser seemed like just the right answer to my space issue so I picked it up and set to work.

It had been spray painted so I gave it a good sanding and cleaning.

    Now back to the post…

Then I pulled out the Bondo to fill old hardware holes and big scratches.
Yep, I said Bondo… like what they use to fix cars. It stinks to high heaven but it’s pretty darn amazing.

If you use it, know that you have a short work time so prep, prep, prep before you mix your batch.

    Filling holes with Bondo

I chose not to make the dresser perfect.

I feel like nail holes, dents, and some wear make a piece interesting. It gives it character and tells a story of a former life. I know some people don’t like that, but it’s just how I role. If you wanted a new piece of perfection than buy one from the factory. Second hand pieces have really lived and I love that.

    Perfection is boring, anyway.

Handpainting an old dresser with Wyeth Blue | Gypsy Magpie

I pulled out my favorite Purdy brush and a can of the prettiest blue-green from my paint stash.

This color is so fun to paint with, such a gorgeous shade! My after pics aren’t showing the true color of blue/green but it’s the best I could do. Don’t mind me, I struggle. What can I say, I’m still learning this whole photography thing! Just know that Wythe Blue by Four Chairs is the answer. It just is.

I chose to hand-paint instead of spray because I was going for a hand-me-down look. I wanted the piece to look like it was inherited from Grandma’s house and fought over by all the granddaughters. You know, that piece of granny’s furniture that everyone loved as a girl and hoped to be given one day as a woman.

Beautiful glass hardware from D. Lawless | Gypsy Magpie

The glass hardware was ordered from D. Lawless.
Their stuff is incredible and they had exactly what I wanted.

    D. Lawless Hardware has the best selection of quality glass knobs and pulls. I may have a tiny hoard growing in a secret place… nobody tell my husband. I just can’t help myself, plus if your order is over $50 you get free shipping so how can I say no? Yep, he’s gonna see this, isn’t he? I’m dead.

I love the simple lines of the old Vaughn of Virginia dresser.

The glass knobs and pretty paint were exactly what it needed to freshen up without making it too busy.

After finishing the project and carrying it up to the 2nd story, I realized it just wasn’t going to work like I thought. I had to laugh at myself so I wouldn’t cry. Sheesh. Sometimes you just have to physically move a piece of furniture to see if it’s what you envisioned or not. That’s just life, my friends.

I love the way the dresser turned out and so wish I could keep it! The combination of Wythe Blue and glass hardware is the stuff of dreams.

Guess my loss is your gain.
This piece is available to Utah residents if you are interested!

So tell me, do you love a piece of furniture with a story
